Discovering The Temples of Godavari

A sacred landscape, a place for reflection and connection

4/11/20263 min read

What makes Godavari special is not just its individual temples, but the way they form a connected spiritual landscape.

Here, you can:

  • Walk through forests to reach hidden shrines

  • Visit both Hindu and Buddhist sacred sites in one journey

  • Experience living traditions rather than curated heritage

  • Find moments of stillness and reflection

This is not a crowded tourist destination—it is a place to slow down and truly experience.

The Godavari area, at the base of the sacred Pulchowki Hill has long been a place of pilgrimage, retreat, and spiritual practice. Here, dense forests, natural springs, and ancient paths connect a network of sacred sites. What makes Godavari unique is the seamless blending of Hindu and Buddhist traditions—temples, shrines, and monasteries exist side by side, reflecting Nepal’s deeply interconnected spiritual culture.

Shantiban Buddha – A Sanctuary of Peace Nestled in the forested hills above Godavari, Shantiban Buddha is one of the area’s most serene and uplifting spiritual sites. The name "Shantiban" means Forest of Peace, and the atmosphere here reflects exactly that.

A golden statue of the Buddha sits in meditation, overlooking the valley below. The walk up through quiet woodland and stone steps is part of the experience—gradually removing you from the noise of daily life. At the summit, the stillness, combined with expansive views across the Kathmandu Valley, creates a powerful sense of calm and perspective. This is a place not only for sightseeing, but for reflection.

Godavari Kunda – Sacred Waters of Renewal At the heart of the area lies Godavari Kunda, a holy pond fed by natural spring water flowing through stone spouts. This site is especially important for Hindu pilgrims, who believe that bathing here cleanses past sins. During the Godavari Mela, thousands gather to take ritual baths and offer prayers. Even outside festival times, the atmosphere is quiet and contemplative—an ideal place to observe living spiritual traditions.

Bishankhu Narayan – The Sleeping Vishnu Hidden in the forested hills near Godavari is Bishanku Narayan Temple, one of the four sacred Narayan (Vishnu) temples of the Kathmandu Valley. The temple is known for its remarkable stone image of Lord Vishnu reclining on the cosmic serpent, a form symbolising protection and preservation of the universe. Compared to the more famous Budhanilkantha, Bishankhu Narayan is quieter and less visited, offering a more intimate spiritual experience. The walk to the temple passes through peaceful woodland, adding to its sense of discovery and reverence.

Santaneshwar Mahadev – A Temple of Blessings This is a revered shrine dedicated to Lord Shiva, particularly associated with blessings for family and children. Local devotees visit regularly to offer prayers, especially those seeking fertility, protection, or wellbeing for their families. The temple itself is modest, but deeply spiritual—reflecting the importance of faith in everyday life.

Its peaceful surroundings make it a meaningful stop for visitors interested in understanding local devotional practices.

Bajrabarahi – Power and Protection This is one of the most culturally significant temples in the area (also known locally as Bajrabahari).

Dedicated to the goddess Barahi—an incarnation associated with power and protection—this temple sits within a forest clearing, creating a striking and atmospheric setting.

The temple is especially important to the nearby Newari community of Khokana, where traditional rituals and festivals are still actively practiced. The blend of Hindu and Tantric Buddhist influences here reflects the depth and complexity of Nepal’s spiritual heritage.

Naudhara and Phulchowki Temples Further into the hills are smaller sacred sites such as Naudhara Vihar and temples dedicated to Phulchowki Mai, the protective deity of the mountain.

These quieter locations are often visited by monks and local villagers, offering a glimpse into daily spiritual life beyond the main pilgrimage routes.
